We kicked off this year by welcoming our newest—and largest—class of members. This crazy talented, crazy motivated group of womxn are passionate about design, but also sustainability, affordable housing, fashion, education, political science, and entrepreneurship. In our first meeting, we talked about our upcoming fall conference, broke up into teams to brainstorm projects for the year ahead, and of course played some icebreakers.
New Interns Welcomed to SWID with Rollouts
In Stanford tradition, all new SWID members were woken up at an unmentionably early hour on Tuesday and led to Main Quad for donuts, coffee, and good jams. We gathered in a circle and recited the SWID oath, promising to uphold the sacred principles of Stanford Womxn in Design and “to empathize the shit out of” each other. Huge congrats to our new interns!
IRL Design Challenge ft. Google & Airbnb designers
We teamed up with board member Krista Sanders and fellow industry-leading designers for an inaugural campus-wide design challenge to help students gain experience solving real-world problems with design. During this program, members were asked to address a challenge that confronts our nation, society, economy, or climate. Over the course of 4 weeks, participants worked in teams to research, design, and implement their proposed solution from concept to launch.
Portfolio Workshop @ Sequoia Design Lab
How might we "help the daring build design legendary companies"? In this hands-on portfolio workshop at Sequoia Design Lab, we collaborated with the founder James Buckhouse and designer Aine Zhou to learn how they “diagnose with data and treat with design.” We began by examining a case study framework, then explored designers’ portfolios using the case study framework, and concluded with tactical and practical skills and resources. And how could we forget the delicious Sprinkles cupcakes?
Keva Dine: Recruiting in the Creative Industry
During Sunday’s SWID meeting we were lucky to hear from Keva Dine, a recruiter for the creative industry. Keva talked about entering the job market and how to build a resume, and gave us some great tips for how to market your brand to best fit the role you want! She even did a mini resume critique for SWID Co-President Liz Gray!
Sign Painting for the Women's March
To prepare for the Women’s March, SWID hosted a gathering to paint signs at the Women’s Community Center!
Fall 2018: Navigating Design Conference
In the fall of 2018, Stanford Women in Design hosted “Navigating Design,” a conference centered around directing paths in the design industry. Over the course of the conference, leaders in the design industry shared their insight on various design topics—from education to community to industry skills—during keynote talks and panels. Over the course of the conference, speakers opened up conversations about how to manage being a female industrial designer in a very male-dominated space, the keys to finding strong mentorship, and different ways to use the design thinking elements for social impact. The conference was open to the public, drawing in both Stanford students and many members of the greater design community.
